‘Akki Runa’ is over for Akki Channabasappa aged actor of Kannada cinema and television hailing from theatre background.
Like any comedy actor Akki Channabasappa swallowed pains of poverty in life. Look at the fate of this 86 years actor of over 100 films – the character artists association members are doing the final rites.
After passing away of Balanagamma, wife, this actor became very dull in life. He had no children and passing away of 45 years long lived wife put him in very uncomfortable situation.
The roles of beggar, poverty stricken roles never stopped the offers that came to him. In real sense he wanted ‘Akk’ – rice to fill his hunger. His role in ‘Ninnolumeyindale’ TV serial as Kiri Kiri Manja earned applaud a few years back.
As the earning was very poor it is Shankhanada Aravind who supported his hunger. In fact ‘AKKI’ is his family name. Father was Rudrappa Akki, mother was Thayavva Akki. In the Belagavi district of Ramadurga he spent his childhood. Seeing dance he used to practice. On August 15, 1947 he applied make up for the first time. At 20 he joined Ballari Lalithamma Drama Company and switched to the company of Honnappa Bhagavathar.
Akki Channabasappa learnt dance from Minuguthare Kalpana. Ranga Geethe, comedy roles came looking for him. He came and joined Gubbi Company in 1970.
