It is a very cinema to find on silver screen. The woman empowerment is talked about much in this 21st century but way back (180 years ago) a gritty and determined Savithri Bai Phule showed how important is education for woman empowerment. She was a self made woman well supported by her husband.
Savitribai was a pioneer who advocated big changes in caste-based Indian society too. Born on January 3, 1831 in Naigaon Maharashtra, Savitribai played an important role in improving women’s rights in India during British rule. She worked for the uplift of women in terms of education. Savitribai was married at a very young age of 9 to social reformer Jyotirao Phule. Jyotirao was 12 years old at the time of marriage. It was Jyotirao who helped her learn how to read and write. He helped her attain high levels of education and live her life with her head held high.
Savitribai set up India’s first women’s school from different castes in Bhidewada, Pune and became first woman teacher in the country. In her lifetime she built 18 such schools in the region. ‘Satyashodhak Samaj’ evolved by Phule couple organized marriages without a priest, without dowry, and at a minimum cost. She continued to lead the Satyashodhak Samaj till her death.
With such a towering personality in the pages of history epoch making woman director Vishal Raj got the right actors Thara and Suchindra Prasad, backed by very haunting music from well known playback singer Sangeetha Katti, cameraman Nagaraj Advani, dialogue writer and others.
Set in the 19th century background ‘Savithri Bai Phule’ is a right biopic well defined by Vishal Raj. The social reformer is more than a biopic. It is based on Sarjoo Katkar (senior journalist served Express group for a long time from Belagavi).
The right requirement for the film of 19th century is pressed for the occasion. HB Nagaraj art direction, Vijayakumar costumes add up to the value of the film.
This is 127 minutes cinema without any unwanted shots or scenes. The meaningful life of Savithri Bai Phule is captured in a precise manner.
It is a life of full of trials and tribulations for Savithri Bai Puhle. The attempt to hold the attention with emotions with background score from Shabbir, Sangeetha Katti song especially Yugave Baa…Jagave Baa… is mesmerizing.
Thara has given another fantastic performance after ‘Hebbat Ramakka’. She is in the race for another national award. Suchindra Prasad is also highly competitive.
Sripathi, Mahantesh, Umesh Teli co actors remain in memory. Savithri Bai Phule was living ‘Goddess Saraswathi’ for the downtrodden women remains in the memory for a long time.
